The Instituto Juan de Mariana (or Juan de Mariana Institute in English) is an independent libertarian economics think tank founded in 2005 and based out of Madrid, Spain. Its objectives are, as per its articles of association, "to make the general public in Spain, Europe and Latin America understand the benefits for the general interest provided by the private property, the free market and the limitation of the State's power".〔(Misión y objetivos del Instituto Juan de Mariana )〕 It is named after the Spanish Jesuit priest Juan de Mariana, the most prominent thinker of the School of Salamanca. It sponsors the Master in Austrian School Economics at the at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid and the Centro de Estudios Superiores Online de Madrid Manuel Ayau. Some of its founding members are its current president Gabriel Calzada Álvarez, an associate professor of economics at King Juan Carlos University since 2004 and President of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín, its current directors Juan Ramón Rallo and Raquel Merino, both of them associate professors at King Juan Carlos University, Daniel Rodríguez Herrera, director at online newspaper Libertad Digital and webmaster of Liberalismo.org, José Carlos Rodríguez, editor of the Spanish newspaper La Gaceta, Fernando Díaz Villanueva, director at Negocios.com, Antonio José Chinchetru, editor at Periodista Digital and Manuel Llamas, editor at online newspaper Libertad Digital. The Instituto Juan de Mariana states that it does not accept any public money nor subsidy in order to uphold their independence from the political powers.〔 The Instituto is funded by private donations made by its members or sponsors. == Activities == The Instituto Juan de Mariana holds regular talks, seminars and courses during the year, and organises a number of annual events: a summer school, the Congress of Austrian School Economics, the Liberacción book fair and the Liberty Dinner. The Instituto also maintains an Observatory of Economics, a project called ''Medicine in Freedom'' and a competition of essays written by students. The Institute organizes regular talks on themes such as the origin of populism in Latin America and the "criminal" history of Communism.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Events )〕 The Congress of Austrian School Economics counts with international exhibitors and the academic backing of the Faculty of Social and Law Sciences of the King Juan Carlos University. The ''Liberacción'' book fair is a one-day showroom for classical liberal and libertarian authors and takes place in Madrid. The Instituto Juan de Mariana Summer School teaches the philosophical, ethical, legal and economical principles of a society of free, responsible people. It was first held at Aranjuez but it takes place at Lanzarote since 2011.
